The next step in the ent series (entInt.1) is being shown at Gallery 416.
As with entDFP, it is an application that creates “art work” based on its interpretation of whether an image holds “consent”. As it finds images, it converts them into a string of text that can be searched for the word “yes”. The more occurrences of this word which are found, the more “artistic license” the application takes in generating a visual response. If “consent” is not found, it creates no derivative work.
For the current exhibit the application is running on a wall-mounted monitor next to two large scale prints (each print is 44” x 33”).

For travelers – much cooler than a single map or guide book.
For me – a person who loves maps, sketchbooks, and translucent overlays – a new obsession?
Moleskine has a new type of book – the City Notebook which I can’t wait to get a copy of. It comes with maps, tabs, and (best of all?) translucent sticky sheets.
An exhibition of artist city sketchbooks just ended in London (Detour: The Moleskine City Notebook Experience)

Cyberconflict—Representations of War in New Media and Electronic Games
In this year’s Chicago Humanities Festival there will be an interesting and provocative exploration of peace and war representations in new media and games.
Today’s lay "experience" of war often comes courtesy of soldier-bloggers, once-censored photographs available online, and "first-person shooter" video games. Columbia College professors of new media Dave Gerding, Annette Barbier and Brendan Riley consider the impact of these new images on our perceptions of war.

Luckily the building was empty and it doesn’t look like anyone was injured. Right now it is classified as a "4-alarm" fire and it looks like it will be awhile before they can put it out.
About half of Columbia’s academic buildings in the area are closed tonight due to the fire (623 S. Wabash, 624 S. Michigan, 600 S. Michigan and 33 E. Congress) .

I love sketchbooks. I keep several active ones for my own personal thought processes, the joy of spontaneous creative flow, and for the capture and and containment of fleeting ideas.
But I really love when people share theirs online.

Pioneering digital-art duo JODI in a rare public demo of their latest video-game hack “MAX PAYNE CHEATS ONLY” 10/5/2006 at the Gene Siskel Film Center (Chicago)
Pioneering digital-art duo JODI in a rare public demo of their latest video-game hack “MAX PAYNE CHEATS ONLY”
Thursday, October 5 at 6:00 pm at the Gene Siskel Film Center (164 N. State / 312-846-2600 /Chicago)
Digital provocateurs JODI (Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans) pioneered Web art in the mid-’90s, upending the conventions of the emerging medium to create anarchic programs that simulated computer crashes, viruses, and error messages. The duo has wrought similar havoc on computer programs and video games, radically disrupting the language of these systems-including interfaces, commands, errors, and code-to subvert the relationship between computer technology and its users. In a rare public appearance, JODI will demonstrate their latest game modifications, MAX PAYNE CHEATS ONLY (2005), a series of “cheats” the duo compiled from the ultra-violent New York vigilante game Max Payne, along with their ground-breaking modifications of the game Quake 1, UNTITLED GAME (199602001), id Software’s game Wolfenstein 3D, SOD (1999), and the early 80s game Jet Set Willy, JET SET WILLY VARIATIONS ©1984 (2002). Co-presented by CATE, the Visiting Artist Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Department of Interactive Arts and Media at Columbia College Chicago. (1996-2005, Netherlands, ca. 60 min., various formats).
Tickets are $9 ($5 for Film Center members), $7 for all students
